A pedra fundamental da Igreja foi colocada em 05 de abril de 1869 na rua Santa Bárbara (antiga General Osório) ao lado da Intendência Municipal, em frente à Praça Voluntários da Pátria (hoje Praça Gaspar Silveira Martins). A imagem de Nossa Senhora da Conceição veio de Concepción, em 1870, e era uma presa da Guerra do Paraguai.

   As obras da antiga capela foram iniciadas em 1869 e concluídas em 1871. A pintura, incluindo os quadros da paixão e a abóbada, com a imagem do Divino, ficaram prontas em 1888.

   Em 1893 (Revolução Federalista), a capela foi invadida pelos revolucionários. Em 1941 foi reformada e construída uma torre.

    A antiga capela foi demolida em 1963 pelos padres capuchinhos e um novo templo foi construído, sendo a primeira missa celebrada em 08 de dezembro de 1966.

    Curiosamente, a imagem que está sobre a cúpula do novo templo é de Nossa Senhora das Graças, obra de Antônio Caringi - escultor pelotense conhecido como o “escultor dos pampas”, famoso por monumentos icônicos do estado, o mais conhecido é a “Estátua do Laçador”, um dos símbolos de Porto Alegre.
